It’s cold as hell. É frio como inferno.

It’s fifteen degrees below zero. It's quinze graus inferiores a zero. -15. They say with Dizem que a wind chill de arrefecimento it feels like -35. se sente ao -35. That’s cold. Isso é frio. Even for a Minnesotan. Mesmo para um Minnesotan.

But I remember the winter of 1995.  That winter it got to -40 (without wind chill). Mas eu me lembro de Inverno de 1995. Este Inverno chegou a -40 (sem vento chill). I was 19 years old, working for $5.25/hour at the local grocery store. Eu tinha 19 anos, trabalha por US $ 5.25/hour a nível local mercearia loja. I was driving a red circa 1981 Dodge Diplomat. Eu estava dirigindo um Dodge Diplomat vermelho circa 1981. It got so cold that the plastic on the steering column constricted and set off the horn. Ela ficou tão frio que o plástico sobre a coluna de direcção e de constricted conjunto largo da buzina. Thankfully, one of my co-workers knew how to disconnect the horn. Felizmente, um dos meus colegas de trabalho sabia o que desligue o chifre. I’m not making this up. Eu não estou fazendo-se presente.

Incidentally, many medieval artists painted Satan blue. Aliás, muitos artistas medieval pintado Satanás azul. Blue, not red. Azul, não vermelho. Why? Por quê? Because they figured that the middle of hell was cold.  The absence of God equaled the absence of warmth. Porque eles figurava no meio do inferno que era frio. A ausência de Deus equaled a ausência de calor. Many in Minnesota would resonate with that. Muitos, em Minnesota seria ressonar com isso. They’d cuss against the cold and call Minnesota a “God forsaken” place. Eles deseja cuss contra o frio e uma chamada Minnesota "Deus abandonaste" lugar.

But not me. Mas não me. I love the winter. Eu adoro o inverno. Even still. Mesmo ainda. It is my second favorite season (after autumn). É minha segunda favorita temporada (depois Outono). I’d still rather have a day like today, -15 and all, then an 85 degree summer day. Eu ainda sim ter um dia como hoje, e todos os -15 e, em seguida, um grau Verão 85 dias.

Most of my fellow Minnesotans don’t share my enthusiasm. A maioria dos meus colegas Minnesotans não partilham o meu entusiasmo. But some do. Mas alguns fazem. Minnesotans are a hardy lot. Minnesotans são uma robusta lote. They have to endure extremes in weather. Eles têm de suportar, em condições atmosféricas extremas. They are influenced by the Scandinavian (the descendants of vikings) culture of the dominant European settlers in this state.  The people can sometimes be as frigid as the cold. Minnesotan men in particular have often embraced a sort of stoicism, a tendency towards introversion, a hard-working, non-complaining ethic towards life. Weather can shape a culture. Tempo pode moldar uma cultura. When it is cold for much of the year, you tend to stay indoors a lot. Quando está frio durante a maior parte do ano, que tendem a permanecer fechados um lote. That causes you to, I think, value interior design and technology. Isso provoca-lhe, penso eu, valor interior design e tecnologia. Perhaps that is why Popular Science named Minneapolis the #1 tech city in America a year or two ago. Talvez por isso é que a Popular Science chamado Minneapolis # 1 tech cidade na América um ano ou dois atrás. The extremes in weather have also made Minnesotans resourceful. As condições climáticas extremas no também tornaram Minnesotans expeditas. We can’t plan on good weather for our day to day activities. Nós não podemos programar em boas condições meteorológicas para as nossas atividades do dia a dia. So we have to improvise. Portanto, temos de improvisar. And the often drab-yet-harsh weather causes us to embrace aesthetics so that we can bring color and flavor to our lives. E muitas vezes a drab-ainda-duras condições meteorológicas-nos a abraçar causas estética para que possamos trazer cor e sabor a nossa vida.

Minnesotans, generally, are hardy people, resourceful people, sometimes emotionally distant, hard-working, creative, a bit introverted, and technologically savvy.  That is how we can still thrive when it is -15 below zero outside, without missing a beat. Minnesotans, geralmente, são pessoas robusta, expeditas pessoas, por vezes, emocionalmente distante, difícil de trabalhar, criativo, um pouco introvertido, e tecnologicamente galopante. Foi dessa forma que ainda pode prosperar quando é inferior a -15 zero fora, sem perder uma batida.

And these cultural values shape our church life.  It is no accident that the Twin Cities is a sort of capital (at least one of the capitals) for all-things-Emergent.  Sure, the undercurrent of Lutheranism helped pave the way for a progressive strain of evangelicalism, but Minnesota tends to embrace the sorts of things Emergent is about: creativity, resourcefulness, technological savviness, introversion (yes, I’d wager that Emergent is primarily introverted…for all the talk, the movement tends towards intellectual pursuits rather than activism). E esses valores culturais moldar a nossa vida da Igreja. Não é por acaso que o Twin Cities é uma espécie de capital (pelo menos uma das capitais)-para todas as coisas-emergentes. Claro que o undercurrent de Lutheranism ajudou a abrir o caminho para uma progressiva estirpe de evangelicalism, Minnesota, mas tende a abraçar o tipo de coisas está prestes emergentes: criatividade, engenho, tecnológica savviness, introversion (sim, eu aposto que é primariamente introvertida emergentes… a falar para todos, o movimento tende a intelectual perseguições sim além ativismo).

So, I’m glad that it is as cold as hell here. Então, eu estou satisfeito por que é tão fria como inferno aqui. The cold air forces us to pursue other things. O ar frio obriga-nos a prosseguir outras coisas. We’re not distracted with nice weather for half the year. Não somos distraídos com nice meteorológicas para a metade do ano. And that helps get the creativity flowing. E isso ajuda a obter a criatividade fluir.
