It’s cold as hell. كما انها باردة الجحيم.

It’s fifteen degrees below zero. انها خمسة عشر درجات تحت الصفر. -15. They say with ويقولون مع wind chill ريح البرد it feels like -35. تشعر انها مثل -35. That’s cold. ان باردة. Even for a Minnesotan. ولو لminnesotan.

But I remember the winter of 1995.  That winter it got to -40 (without wind chill). ولكن اتذكر شتاء عام 1995. الشتاء وهي ان وصلت الى -40 (البرد دون الريح). I was 19 years old, working for $5.25/hour at the local grocery store. كنت 19 عاما ويعمل من اجل 5.25/hour دولار على الصعيد المحلي وبقالة. I was driving a red circa 1981 Dodge Diplomat. الاول كان يقود الاحمر حوالى 1981 دودج الدبلوماسي. It got so cold that the plastic on the steering column constricted and set off the horn. حتى انها حصلت الباردة من البلاستيك على ان التوجيهيه العمود مقلص ويفجر القرن الافريقي. Thankfully, one of my co-workers knew how to disconnect the horn. حسن الحظ ، من بلدي واحد الزملاء في العمل واعرف كيف لقطع القرن. I’m not making this up. انا لست جعل هذا الامر.

Incidentally, many medieval artists painted Satan blue. وبالمناسبه ، الكثير من الفنانين في العصور الوسطى التي رسمها الشيطان الازرق. Blue, not red. الأزرق ، وليس الاحمر. Why? لماذا؟ Because they figured that the middle of hell was cold.  The absence of God equaled the absence of warmth. لأنها تظهر أن الاوسط هو الجحيم الباردة. عدم وجود الله كان يعادل عدم وجود الدفء. Many in Minnesota would resonate with that. في العديد من ولاية مينيسوتا ان من شأنه ان صدى. They’d cuss against the cold and call Minnesota a “God forsaken” place. انها تريد الباردة ضد الشخص والدعوة الى ولاية مينيسوتا "تخلى عن الله".

But not me. ولكن ليس لي. I love the winter. أنا أحب فصل الشتاء. Even still. حتى لا تزال. It is my second favorite season (after autumn). ومن المفضل لبلدي الثانية الموسم (بعد الخريف). I’d still rather have a day like today, -15 and all, then an 85 degree summer day. انا لا تزال بدلا من يوم كهذا اليوم ، -15 وقبل كل شيء ، ثم في الصيف 85 درجة في اليوم.

Most of my fellow Minnesotans don’t share my enthusiasm. معظم زملائي لا minnesotans تشاركونني الحماس. But some do. ولكن البعض منهن. Minnesotans are a hardy lot. Minnesotans هي هاردي الكثير. They have to endure extremes in weather. لأنها تحمل في الأحوال الجوية المتطرفة. They are influenced by the Scandinavian (the descendants of vikings) culture of the dominant European settlers in this state.  The people can sometimes be as frigid as the cold. وهي تتأثر الاسكندنافيه (المتحدرين من الفايكنكز) ثقافة المهيمنه المستوطنين الأوروبيين في هذه الدولة. شعب كما يمكن في بعض الاحيان كما frigid الباردة. Minnesotan men in particular have often embraced a sort of stoicism, a tendency towards introversion, a hard-working, non-complaining ethic towards life. Minnesotan الرجال على وجه الخصوص في كثير من الأحيان نوعا من اعتنق الرواقيه ، والميل نحو الانطواء الذاتي ، ويعمل بجد ، تشكو من عدم اخلاقيه تجاه الحياة. But Minnesotans also embrace the social progressivism and compassion of modern Scandinavians. ولكن ايضا minnesotans احتضان الاجتماعية التقدميه والتعاطف الحديثة الاسكندنافيون.

Weather can shape a culture. الطقس يمكن ان تشكل ثقافة. When it is cold for much of the year, you tend to stay indoors a lot. في حين انه الباردة لمعظم فترات السنة ، كنت تميل الى البقاء في الداخل كثيرا. That causes you to, I think, value interior design and technology. ان الاسباب لك ، واعتقد ان قيمة التصميم الداخلي والتكنولوجيا. Perhaps that is why Popular Science named Minneapolis the #1 tech city in America a year or two ago. ولعل هذا هو السبب في تسميته الشعبية العلم مينيابوليس # 1 تقنيه مدينة فى امريكا خلال سنة او سنتين قبل. The extremes in weather have also made Minnesotans resourceful. في اقصى الاحوال الجوية كما بذلت minnesotans الحيله. We can’t plan on good weather for our day to day activities. لا يمكننا ان الاحوال الجوية الجيدة على خطة لأعمالنا يوم الى آخر. So we have to improvise. وبالتالي فانه يجب علينا في الارتجال. And the often drab-yet-harsh weather causes us to embrace aesthetics so that we can bring color and flavor to our lives. والمومس في كثير من الاحيان - حتى الآن - الاحوال الجوية القاسيه التي تدفعنا الى اعتناق جماليات حتى يتسنى لنا تقديم لون ونكهه الى حياتنا.

Minnesotans, generally, are hardy people, resourceful people, sometimes emotionally distant, hard-working, creative, a bit introverted, and technologically savvy.  That is how we can still thrive when it is -15 below zero outside, without missing a beat. Minnesotans ، بصفة عامة ، هي هاردي الناس ، الناس الحيله ، واحيانا بعيدة عاطفيا ، ويعملون بجد ، خلاقه ، introverted قليلا ، وتكنولوجيا الشطاره. هذه هي الطريقة التي لا يزال بوسعنا أن تزدهر عندما يكون خارج -15 تحت الصفر ، من دون أي فوز في عداد المفقودين.

And these cultural values shape our church life.  It is no accident that the Twin Cities is a sort of capital (at least one of the capitals) for all-things-Emergent.  Sure, the undercurrent of Lutheranism helped pave the way for a progressive strain of evangelicalism, but Minnesota tends to embrace the sorts of things Emergent is about: creativity, resourcefulness, technological savviness, introversion (yes, I’d wager that Emergent is primarily introverted…for all the talk, the movement tends towards intellectual pursuits rather than activism). وهذه القيم الثقافيه لدينا شكل الكنيسة في الحياة. وليس من قبيل الصدفة ان الشريكه شكل من اشكال رأس المال (واحد على الاقل من العواصم) - بالنسبة لجميع الامور - الناشءه. وبالتأكيد ، فإن من غير معلنة لوثريه في تمهيد الطريق امام تدريجي الاجهاد الناجم عن الانجليكانيه ، ولكن ولاية مينيسوتا يميل الى تبني انواع من الامور الطارئة على وشك : الابداع وسعه الحيله ، Savviness التكنولوجيه ، والانطواء الذاتي (نعم ، أنا الرهان ان الناشءه في المقام الأول بالنسبة لجميع introverted… الحديث ، الحركة الفكريه يميل بدلا من الملاحقات من الفعاليه).

So, I’m glad that it is as cold as hell here. ذلك ، أنا سعيد أنه ما الباردة كما الجحيم هنا. The cold air forces us to pursue other things. القوات الجوية الباردة علينا السعي الى امور اخرى. We’re not distracted with nice weather for half the year. نحن لم تصرف مع نيس الطقس لمدة نصف السنة. And that helps get the creativity flowing. والتي تساعد على الحصول على تدفق الإبداع.
