The Myth of Progress اسطوره التقدم

A few months ago I e-mailed one of my pastors at my church after he gave a sermon on the Kingdom of God. قبل بضعة اشهر انني بالبريد الالكتروني من احد القساوسه في بلادي بلادي الكنيسة بعد القى عظة عن ملكوت الله. As part of a long, frustrated e-mail, I wrote the following: وكجزء من عملية طويلة واحبطت البريد الالكتروني ، كتبت ما يلي :

My biggest question is, why aren’t we seeing the progress on earth? بلدي اكبر والسؤال هو : لماذا لا ونحن نشهد احراز تقدم على الأرض؟ Why haven’t the cosmic changes that Jesus’ coming brought turned into real changes on earth? لماذا لم الكوني التغييرات التي يسوع القادمة جلبت تحولت الى تغييرات حقيقية على الارض؟ I know that the Kingdom of God is a long work in progress, but why can’t I see any big concrete changes towards the Kingdom of God? وانا اعلم ان مملكة الله هو عملية طويلة التقدم في العمل ، ولكن لماذا لا أرى أي تغييرات ملموسة كبيرة نحو مملكة الله؟ I know there have been many many many little things that Christians and churches have done over the past 2000 years to make earth a little more heavenly, but it doesn’t seem like there has actually been a mass movement forward, even if it is just a little bit more forward. وانا اعرف لقد كان هناك العديد العديد من الاشياء التي تذكر العديد من المسيحيين والكنائس قامت به على مدى السنوات ال 2000 سنة لجعل الأرض أكثر قليلا السماوية ، ولكن لا يبدو ان هناك فعلا حركة جماعيه الى الأمام ، حتى ولو كانت عادلة اكثر قليلا الى الامام. Instead it seems like we are in much the same place, if not in a worse, more sinful, and evil condition. وبدلا من ذلك يبدو مثل الكثير ونحن في نفس المكان ، إذا ليست في وضع اسوأ من ذلك ، اكثر خاطئين ، والشر شرط. Now I definitely can’t grasp the whole scope of history around the world in the past 2000 years, but it doesn’t seem like the world is moving towards peace as we are building up larger militaries, amassing nuclear weapons, and fighting over ever more dwindling resources. انا الآن بالتأكيد لا يمكن فهم كامل نطاق التاريخ في جميع انحاء العالم في السنوات الماضية 2000 ، ولكن لا يبدو ان العالم يتجه نحو السلام ونحن بناء أكبر جيوش ، وتكديس الأسلحة النووية ، والقتال اكثر من اي وقت مضى المزيد من الموارد المتناقصه. It doesn’t seem like we are moving towards the end of poverty as the gap between the rich and poor is growing ever larger still, and the Christians around the world have the resources to end extreme poverty on their own, yet aren’t doing it. لا يبدو مثل نحن نتحرك نحو نهاية للفقر كما ان الفجوه بين الاغنياء والفقراء آخذة في الاتساع لا تزال اكبر من اي وقت مضى ، والمسيحيين في جميع انحاء العالم لديها الموارد اللازمة لوضع حد للفقر المدقع من تلقاء أنفسهم ، ومع ذلك لا تفعل هو. It doesn’t seem like we are moving towards authentic loving communities as our lives become more and more individualistic and media-based. لا يبدو مثل نحن نتحرك نحو الحجيه المحبة المجتمعات حياتنا أصبحت أكثر وأكثر فردية وسائط الاعلام القائمة. My longing for the Kingdom of God led to deep frustrations when I couldn’t see it coming. بي الشوق لمملكة الله ادى الى الاحباط الشديد عندما لا استطيع ان انظر القادمة. I wanted tangible examples of the redemption of God here on earth. اردت امثلة ملموسة على الفداء من الله هنا على الارض. Small examples wouldn’t do; I wanted to see progress towards the glorious return of Jesus, when there would be a new heaven and new earth, and all of creation would be redeemed. الامثله الصغيرة لن يفعل ؛ اردت ان نرى التقدم المحرز نحو تحقيق عودة المسيح المجيده ، وعندما يكون هناك السماء الجديدة والارض الجديدة ، وجميع الخلق أن أفتدي. I believed that if the Church just got it’s act together, and we all agreed that we needed to end injustice, love our neighbor, and overthrow the Empire, we could do it. اننى اعتقد انه اذا كانت الكنيسة مجرد انها حصلت على العمل معا ، واتفقنا جميعا على اننا بحاجة لوضع حد للظلم ، لدينا حب الجار ، واسقاط الامبراطوريه ، يمكننا عمل ذلك. I believed that the Church could usher in the Kingdom of God through strong effort and unity. انني اعتقد ان الكنيسة يمكن ان تستهل في مملكة الله من خلال بذل جهد قوي والوحدة.

I realize now that I started believing in the “myth of progress.” انني أدرك الآن انني بدأت في الاعتقاد "اسطوره التقدم".

NT Wright, in his book NT رايت ، في كتابه Surprised by Hope فوجئ الأمل , explains the myth of progress: ويوضح اسطوره التقدم :

“[The myth of progress is] the idea that the human project, and indeed the cosmic project, could and would continue to grow and develop, producing unlimited human improvement and marching toward a utopia…. "اسطوره التقدم] فكرة ان الانسان المشروع ، والواقع ان المشروع الكوني ، ويمكن أن تستمر في النمو والتطور ، وحقوق غير محدودة لانتاج وتحسين ويسيرون في اتجاه مدينة فاضله…. This utopia dream is in fact a parody of the Christian vision. يوتوبيا هذا الحلم هو في الواقع الباروديا للرؤية المسيحيه. The kingdom of God and the kingdoms of the world come together to produce a vision of history moving forward towards its goal, a goal that will emerge from within rather than being a new gift from elsewhere. مملكة الله وممالك من العالم معا لوضع رؤية التاريخ المضي قدما نحو تحقيق هدفه ، وهو هدف لن يخرج من داخل بدلا من ان يكون هدية من جديد في اماكن اخرى. Humans can be made perfect and are indeed evolving inexorably toward that point.” البشر يمكن ان يكون مثاليا والتطور هي في الواقع لا محالة نحو تلك النقطه. "

We believe this myth when we believe that the next political leader will finally solve some the world’s problems once and for all. ونعتقد ان هذه الاسطوره عندما نعتقد ان الزعيم السياسي القادم فى نهاية المطاف فى حل بعض مشاكل العالم مرة والى الأبد. We believe this myth when we believe medical advances will eventually rid the world of disease. ونعتقد ان هذه الاسطوره عند التقدم الطبي ونحن نعتقد في نهاية المطاف تخليص العالم من هذا المرض. We believe this myth when we believe economic growth will eventually end world poverty. ونعتقد ان هذه الاسطوره عندما نؤمن النمو الاقتصادي في نهاية المطاف انهاء الفقر في العالم. We believe this myth when we believe the Church can build the Kingdom of God ونعتقد ان هذه الاسطوره عندما نعتقد ان الكنيسة يمكن ان يبنى مملكة الله

When we stop believing in this myth we see that it is no longer our responsibility to build the Kingdom of God, but that doesn’t mean that we should try to slide through this life as painlessly as possible, waiting to go to heaven or until Jesus’ return. وعندما نتوقف عند هذا الاعتقاد في اسطوره ونحن نرى انه لم يعد لدينا مسؤولية لبناء مملكة الله ، ولكن هذا لا يعني أنه ينبغي أن نحاول من خلال هذه الشريحه في الحياة بشكل غير مؤلم قدر الامكان ، في انتظار الذهاب الى الجنة او الى حين يسوع العودة. Please don’t get me wrong, we have a very real work to do here on earth, building for the Kingdom of God. الرجاء عدم لى ان احصل على خطأ ، لدينا حقيقيا جدا من الاعمال التي لا بد هنا على الارض ، من اجل بناء مملكة الله. We are not going to build the kingdom on our own; it will come from God as a new creation, as an act of redemption, not as the final conclusion to the progress we are making here on earth. اننا لن نبني المملكه وحدنا ، بل سوف تأتي من الله كما خلق جديد ، كما فعل الفداء ، وليس كما استنتاج نهائي الى التقدم الذي نحرزه هنا على الارض. Yet every work of grace, every work of love, justice, and compassion, is building for the kingdom, and will be part of the kingdom when it comes in full. بعد كل عمل من نعمه كل اعمال الحب ، والعدل ، والرحمه ، هو بناء للمملكة ، وستكون جزءا من المملكه عندما يتعلق الامر بالكامل. In 1 Cor. 1 في تبليغ الوثائق. 15, Paul speaks about the resurrection of the dead and the coming new creation, and he ends the chapter in verse 58 by saying, “Always give yourselves fully to the work of the Lord, because you know that your labor in the Lord is not in vain.” We may not be able to build the Kingdom of God on our own, nor will we slowly progress towards it, but let us be assured that our work here on earth is not in vain, that we really can build for the kingdom, with the assurance that in the end God will redeem all of creation. 15 ، بول يتحدث عن القيامة من القتلى والقادمة من خلق جديد ، وانه ينتهي الفصل في الآية 58 قائلا : "دائما اعطاء انفسكم تماما لعمل الرب ، لأنك تعرف ان العمل الخاص بك في الرب لا تذهب سدى. "اننا قد لا نتمكن من اجل بناء مملكة الله لوحدنا ، كما اننا لن ببطء التقدم المحرز نحو تحقيق ، ولكن علينا ان يتأكد من ان عملنا هنا على الارض لم تذهب سدى ، واننا يمكن ان يبني حقا لل المملكه ، مع ضمان أن تكون في نهاية الله سوف ننجز جميع الخلق.
