Invitation to Missio Dei

Written by Mark Van Steenwyk : December 5, 2006

In light of my recent post about Missio Dei’s “reboot,” I want to extend an open invitation. After this season of prayer, Missio Dei will begin afresh in the way we ought to have begun two years ago. Missio Dei will be a community of people who center their lives around Jesus on the West Bank. We will be a community of people committed to following Jesus’ way of peace, simplicity, prayer, and radical hospitality. We will live to embody Jesus’ presence on the West Bank–a home for students, progressives and refugees, a haven for the poor. Though some of us live on the West Bank, others will live elsewhere as they struggle all the more to find a way to anchor and center their lives around the West Bank.

This vision for ministry isn’t big and impressive–it is simple. We have tried to strip away our assumptions and our grand dreams. What we want to do is simply live like Jesus among the people of the West Bank. Though we will gather to sing and discuss ideas, what we really will be offering to our neighbors is a nightly hot meal, our friendship, and perhaps a place to sleep for the night. We will try to intertwine our lives with the people we come into contact regularly and hope rub Jesus off on them as we see the face of Jesus in theirs (Mt 25:31-46).

If you want this vision to be your vision, we invite you to come on this journey with us–or at least to come explore with us whether or not this is a journey on which you want to embark. If you are interested, email me at markvans [at] gmail.com. We’ll be having a prayer and discernment gathering in January and again in February for those interested in the being a part of this new journey (both folks that have been around and those who are newly interested).

Most of the folks in the past that have been interested in joining with us have wanted to live in a community house as part of their involvement. Sadly, we were unable to accommodate them. Here’s the thing: if you’d like to live communally as part of your involvement at Missio Dei, there are some possibilities: Amy and I are buying a home on the West Bank and there will be limited room for others. Additionally, there are houses for rent that I could try to snatch up if I knew there were folks interested–in other words, I could broker a rental agreement if I knew there were a handful of interested renters.

Kevin, that room in particular isn’t available, but we have one that is. I’d love to have you for a visit.

Thanks for the encouraging words, Mike.
