gearing up for another conference…

Written by Mark Van Steenwyk : March 1, 2007

A year ago, my friend Jeff Gauss and I hosted the Conference on Christianity in a Consumer Culture.  In my humble opinion, it was a great conference…though it had a mediocre turnout.  We had great speakers and presenters, though we mistakenly over-focused our promotional energy on evangelicals.  Consumerism isn’t something on the evangelical radar.

I’ve been talking to a few folks about throwing another conference for Spring 2008 (a year from now).  This time, the focus will be a bit broader; we want to have a conference that explores Jesus’ way of justice. We also want the appeal to be broader–less academic–than the last conference.  We’ll have better known speakers, a larger venue, and more sponsors.  I also hope to have more folks involved in the planning of the conference (hopefully my friend Jeff will be able to reunite the old dynamic duo).  My goal is to have 3 main speakers, and 8 breakout speakers.  I’m hoping to have several hundred in attendance.

Here’s how you can help me out:

1) Who do you think would be good speakers for a conference about Jesus’ way of justice?

2) What would be a spiffy name for the conference?

    1) a friend of mine, Jason Russell, might be a good speaker if not then a hell of breakout session leader. Jason is the director of a non-prof in san diego called Invisible Children (www.invisiblechildren.com)

    2) “the justice that even your mama would be proud of but not want you to be involved in” its long but we could put hyphens between each word to make it a really long adjective.

How about, ” God’s scales of Justice…the ” cross ” where is all hangs in balance “

Clint: Jason Russell is definitely worth considering. Your name for the conference, is indeed too long. The web domain that we get for it would cause finger spasms. ;)
Michael: As much as I’d love to hear Ched Myers, I think he may be a bit more than most folks at the conference could take. I’m thinking that this conference would be more of an onramp into a deeper exploration of Jesus’ way of justice.
