In this election season, thinking about presidential candidates is important, but thinking on a localized level is much more important. For instance, do you personally know what your mayor stands for and the major things he is trying to get done? People must understand that, while the president is an important figurehead in the world, he has little to do with the changes and policies of our cities. Even at the state level, the president does not make many of the decisions that affect our lives. But working through the city and state governments should not even be the main way Christians interact with society. So as a Christian who wants to get involved in the world, I have a few simple suggestion that—while some of these may make us uncomfortable—are some ways we can “be the church” to the world around us. Notice that none of my suggestions simply allow someone to throw money at a “cause.” If we are the church, then we ourselves should embody Jesus Christ as Lord day in and day out.
