For me, the striking thing about Isaiah 58 (and a similar passage, Micah 6) is that they are written to a specific people in a specific time and place. In contrast, the message of these passages seems to be a call for a just people, a community that embodies justice in its daily life in the place and time that it finds itself. First and foremost, I believe that the call is to be a community shaped and characterized by just living. The German theologian Gerhard Lohfink often refers to the Church as a “contrast society,” and I think this language is useful for understanding the prophets’ call to justice in these passages. In the last couple years the topic of global warming has skyrocketed from a fringe scientific debate to very mainstream, with everyday people, governments and businesses striving to find ways to ‘carbon-offset’ their living. I don’t particularly mind which group you place yourself in. What I do find fascinating and somewhat confusing though, is the fact that 3 of the four groups, constituting a majority, agree that there is a problem and that it could get severe; if not today, then in the future. Something I mentioned in my article about prayer the other day has been whirling around my brain and conversations as of late. Radical Christianity as embodied in various ways in the West seems to place quite a bit of importance on social action. The reason Christianity in the West is in such stark decline is that, despite all our action, we lack the ability to allow our practice to be animated by the Spirit through discipleship. When I was a Sophomore in high school I had an English teacher who lived in some type of commune downtown; she was weird. These folks would redeem food from the excess trash of our consumer culture, and make delicious stews, pastas, sandwiches and more, and then we’d go out and have a party, pot-luck style, in the park for anyone and everyone. It was a beautiful snapshot of what the kingdom of God might look like, except one thing, there weren’t many ‘christians.’

In Nashville it was particularly striking. I attended a church on Sunday mornings, and then helped out in some fashion with Food Not Bombs on Sunday afternoons. I would frequently suggest people from the church help out, they instead opted to go out to eat at a restaurant. It was the perfect opportunity to live out the faith we joined together to sing about and talk about in the morning, but unfortunately, in two years I had no takers. I just didn’t understand.

So, I wonder… Who are the Christ Followers? Are they the ones who wake up on Sunday and gather together to sing and talk about Jesus? Or are they the ones that never mention His name or claim to follow, yet their actions fall in line with what He called us to do?

New Monasticism: Fringe Christianity?

Recently, the Boston Globe ran an article on New Monasticism . The article was very good–the best that I’ve read.

I want to interact with one section of the article in particular. I’d love to hear your response to some questions that the article raises. Here is a snippet of the article, with my comments/questions throughout:

I have indeed received concerned emails. And I’ve been asked (both explicitly and implicitly) to justify our ministry. Sometimes, when I’m feeling tired and vulnerable, the challenges from friends and foes alike get to me. Most critiques I’ve heard fall into two categories: theological critiques and practical critiques.

Theologically speaking, would it be so bad if evangelicals became more mystical? What are the good things that evangelicals could learn from mystical traditions? On the other hand, what good things do evangelicals stand to lose?

Practicaly speaking, is living in community, practicing hospitality, and embracing simplicty really that “fringe?” It seems to me that these are all VERY traditional things to do…I think that the last 50 years of affluent living in single-family homes is “fringe.” What should the normative Christian life look like? Though many Roman Catholics have mixed feelings about evangelicals who adopt a hodgepodge of watered-down monastic practices and call themselves “monks,” some are supportive of New Monasticism.
