It’s cold as hell. Hace frío como el infierno.

It’s fifteen degrees below zero. Se trata de quince grados bajo cero. -15. They say with Ellos dicen con wind chill temperatura de sensación it feels like -35. se siente como -35. That’s cold. Eso es frío. Even for a Minnesotan. Incluso para una Minnesotan.

But I remember the winter of 1995.  That winter it got to -40 (without wind chill). Pero yo recuerdo el invierno de 1995. Ese invierno llegó a -40 (sin temperatura de sensación). I was 19 years old, working for $5.25/hour at the local grocery store. Yo tenía 19 años, que trabajan por $ 5.25/hour en el supermercado. I was driving a red circa 1981 Dodge Diplomat. Because they figured that the middle of hell was cold.  The absence of God equaled the absence of warmth. Porque imaginé que a mediados del infierno era frío. Most of my fellow Minnesotans don’t share my enthusiasm. La mayoría de mis colegas Minnesotans no comparten mi entusiasmo. But some do. Pero algunos lo hacen. Minnesotans are a hardy lot. They are influenced by the Scandinavian (the descendants of vikings) culture of the dominant European settlers in this state.  The people can sometimes be as frigid as the cold. Minnesotan men in particular have often embraced a sort of stoicism, a tendency towards introversion, a hard-working, non-complaining ethic towards life. Weather can shape a culture. El tiempo puede conformar una cultura. When it is cold for much of the year, you tend to stay indoors a lot. Las temperaturas extremas en el clima también han hecho Minnesotans recursos. We can’t plan on good weather for our day to day activities. And the often drab-yet-harsh weather causes us to embrace aesthetics so that we can bring color and flavor to our lives. Minnesotans, generally, are hardy people, resourceful people, sometimes emotionally distant, hard-working, creative, a bit introverted, and technologically savvy.  That is how we can still thrive when it is -15 below zero outside, without missing a beat. Minnesotans, en general, son personas resistentes, las personas con recursos, a veces emocionalmente distante, muy trabajador, creativo, un poco introvertido, y tecnológicamente conocimiento informático. Así es como podemos crecer aún cuando se -15 bajo cero fuera, sin problemas.

And these cultural values shape our church life.  It is no accident that the Twin Cities is a sort of capital (at least one of the capitals) for all-things-Emergent.  Sure, the undercurrent of Lutheranism helped pave the way for a progressive strain of evangelicalism, but Minnesota tends to embrace the sorts of things Emergent is about: creativity, resourcefulness, technological savviness, introversion (yes, I’d wager that Emergent is primarily introverted…for all the talk, the movement tends towards intellectual pursuits rather than activism). Y estos valores culturales forma de vida de nuestra iglesia. No es casualidad que las Ciudades Gemelas es una especie de capital (por lo menos una de las capitales) para todas las cosas-emergente. Claro, el trasfondo de luteranismo ayudó a allanar el camino para una progresiva cepa de evangelicalism, pero Minnesota tiende a abarcar el tipo de cosas es emergente sobre: la creatividad, ingenio, tecnológicos savviness, introversión (sí, me encantaría que apuesta emergente es principalmente introvertida… para todo lo que se habla, el movimiento tiende hacia la búsqueda intelectual y no que el activismo).

So, I’m glad that it is as cold as hell here. Por lo tanto, me complace que es tan frío como el infierno aquí. The cold air forces us to pursue other things. El aire frío nos obliga a buscar otras cosas. We’re not distracted with nice weather for half the year. No estamos distraídos con buen tiempo para la mitad del año. And that helps get the creativity flowing. Y eso ayuda a la creatividad que fluye.
