John 1:34 informs us that Jesus is God’s elect. João 1:34 nos informa que Jesus é Deus da eleição. Election. Eleição. It is a word that means different things among different people. É uma palavra que significa coisas diferentes entre pessoas diferentes. Calvinists love the word (if you’ve experienced “election” it means that you’re in; it is the un-elect that go to hell). Calvinista amor à palavra (se você está passando "eleição", significa que você está em: é a ONU-que elegem ir para o inferno). But these days, the word “election” makes Barack Obama or Hillary Clinton or Mitt Romney or John McCain flash into our minds. Mas estes dias, a palavra "eleição" faz Barack Obama ou Hillary Clinton ou Mitt Romney ou John McCain flash em nossas mentes.

Underneath it all, “election” is about choice. Abaixo tudo, "eleição" é de cerca de escolha. We think of it as the people of a nation deciding together who will lead them. Nós pensamos nele como o povo de uma nação decidir que irá levá-los juntos. In the days before the so-called Enlightenment, the word “election”also referrd to the choosing of leaders. John tells us that God chose Jesus to lead his people. João Deus nos diz que Jesus escolheu para conduzir o seu povo. He is our elected leader.  He is the elected King of God’s Kingdom.  And like all God’s chosen kings, he was anointed (by John’s Baptism), but unlike previous Kings, he was anointed by the Holy Spirit. Ele é nosso líder eleito. Ele é eleito o Rei do reino de Deus. E como todos os reis escolhidos de Deus, ele foi anointed (por John's Batismo), mas ao contrário Kings anterior, ele foi anointed pelo Espírito Santo.

Unlike modern-day elections, Jesus went campaigning after he was elected.  He went out among the people calling for change. For repentence.  The question wasn’t whether or not he would be the King. Para o arrependimento. A questão não era saber se ele seria ou não o rei. Jesus’ call to repentance has more in common with Barack Obama’s call for change than it does with evangelical altar calls.  Jesus’ message is political: I’m bringing in a new regime. Jesus' chamada para o arrependimento tem mais em comum com Barack Obama da chamada para a mudança do que funciona com evangélicos altar chamadas. Jesus "é uma mensagem política: Eu estou trazendo em um novo regime. If you want to be a part of my administration, then you have to leave the old one. And so when Jesus went around calling people to repentance, it was like he was campaigning for change.  For a new administration—the administration of God. Jesus begins his campaign in the margins, on the fringes of political and religious power: Jesus inicia a sua campanha nas margens, à margem do poder político e religioso:

From that time on Jesus began to preach, “Repent, for the kingdom of heaven has come near.” De vez em que Jesus começou a pregar, "Arrependei, para o reino dos céus chegou perto."

Repentance requires a training in a new way of life. Arrependimento exige uma formação de uma nova forma de vida. This new way of life is called “discipleship.” It isn’ta simple choice, but a life one embraces. Esta nova forma de vida é chamado de "discipulado." Ela não é simples opção, mas uma vida um abraça. It is a complete shift to a new way of life. Trata-se de uma completa mudança para uma nova forma de vida. What we read in the gospels is Jesus’ training of his disciples into a new way: the Kingdom of God.  These 12 helped with the campaign.  They passed it on to others, who passed it onto others and now we are responsible for campaigning. O que lemos nos evangelhos Jesus é o treinamento de seus discípulos em um novo caminho: o Reino de Deus. Estes 12 ajudou com a campanha. Eles passaram lo a outros, que passaram-lo para outros, e agora somos responsáveis pela campanha.

Jesus has been elected. Jesus foi eleito. And when we live in his new administration, we embrace a new way of life that comes into conflict with the old. As we embrace this new way, and experience the life-giving presence of the Spirit, we can go demonstrate and proclaim this new life.
