The Year Ahead

Written by Mark Van Steenwyk : January 8, 2008

It is my birthday tomorrow.  I like having my birthday so close to New Year’s Day. That means that my hopes and wishes for the new year are the hopes and wishes for MY new year. And so, I’d like to share my hopes for the coming year. Some of them are things you could help me with…so if you want to help bring these things to pass, I’d consider it a birthday present. ;)

  • I’d like my son Jonas to be born healthy, and for his mom to be healthy too.
  • I’d like to see Jesus Manifesto grow into a hub for radical Christian community–for Anabaptists and Christian Anarchists and Kingdom-minded people everywhere.  I’d like our readership to grow from about 400-500 a day to over 1000 a day.  I’d like more contributors, better writing–writing that covers a lot of different issues from a radical Christian perspective. I’d like to see a few key writers emerge to become co-editors and regular columnists.
  • I’d like to see at least 10 new Christarchy! groups form. I’m not looking to grow a kingdom here, I’m looking to grow THE kingdom. I don’t care what the groups call themselves, but I know it is an idea whose time has come.
  • We’re already working on this, but I’d like to see the first Submergent conference happen…and my hope and prayer is that it is practically focused, inexpensive, and meaningful.
  • I’d love to see Missio Dei get a permanent home. I’m not talking about a church building, I’m talking about a place for community living, hospitality, classrooms, offices, and connection with the community.
  • I’d like Missio Dei to grow in its ability to train disciples; I’m hoping this is our year to begin training interns and grow in our capacity to tangibly serve our neighborhood.
  • I’d like to get a book deal for the Jesus Manifesto (and maybe even my intended follow-up, the Subversive Spirit). The first book explores what kingdom living looks like in the American Empire (which is the focus of this site).  The second book explores the role of the Holy Spirit in the life of the church…call it a practical emerging Anabaptist pneumatology.
  • I’d like to lose 50lbs. Yep, I’m a big guy.  Most people think I’m thinner than I am.  A fat new monastic is a bit of a sad thing.  I guess I’m the friar tuck of the movement. ;)

May God´s will be done and God´s kingdom come. And “Jonas” is a wonderful name, by the way!
