While I don’t ever see myself becoming a Catholic, I have deep respect for the Pope. Not only is his love for Christ obvious, but so is his devotion to the Way of Christ. These words come from his sermon yesterday (emphasis mine): Embora eu não veja eu alguma vez se tornar um católico, tenho profundo respeito pelo Papa. What is certain is that Christ’s proposal is realistic, because it takes into account that in the world there is too much violence, too much injustice, and that this situation cannot be overcome without positing more love, more kindness. O que é certo é que a proposta do Cristo é realista, uma vez que leva em conta que no mundo há muita violência, muita injustiça, e que esta situação não pode ser superada sem colocar mais amor, mais eqüitativamente. This “more” comes from God: It is his mercy that has become flesh in Jesus and that alone can redress the balance of the world from evil to good, beginning from that small and decisive “world” which is man’s heart. This page of the Gospel is rightly considered the “magna carta” of Christian nonviolence; it does not consist in surrendering to evil — as claims a false interpretation of “turn the other cheek” (Luke 6:29) — but in responding to evil with good. I agree with the Pope here, that our nonviolent response to violence isn’t mere strategy or tactics, but the way of defeating injustice with love. Amen. Concordo com o Papa aqui, que a nossa resposta não violenta a violência não é mera estratégia ou táctica, mas a maneira de derrotar injustiça com amor. Amen.

I am struggling to like this pope. Estou lutando para como este papa. I had huge respect for his predecessor, but when Pope Benedict was still Cardinal Ratzinger, he did great harm to many of the best theologians in contemporary Catholicism–including some I knew personally. i think you are right that the pope can be wise from time to time.
