While I don’t ever see myself becoming a Catholic, I have deep respect for the Pope. Not only is his love for Christ obvious, but so is his devotion to the Way of Christ. These words come from his sermon yesterday (emphasis mine): Mentre io non vedere mai diventare io stesso un cattolico, ho profondo rispetto per il Papa. Non solo è il suo amore per Cristo ovvio, ma così è la sua devozione verso la via di Cristo. Queste parole provengono da ieri il suo sermone (sottolineatura mia ):
…Why does Jesus ask us to love our very enemies, that is, ask a love that exceeds human capacities? … Perché Gesù ci chiede di amare i nostri nemici molto, cioè, chiedere a un amore che supera le capacità umane? What is certain is that Christ’s proposal is realistic, because it takes into account that in the world there is too much violence, too much injustice, and that this situation cannot be overcome without positing more love, more kindness. I agree with the Pope here, that our nonviolent response to violence isn’t mere strategy or tactics, but the way of defeating injustice with love. Amen. dlw: As I said above, these words sound nice, but they don’t say that much upon closer examination. dlw: Come ho detto in precedenza, queste parole suono piacevole, ma non dire che gran parte su di un esame più attento. Noise is a word subject to selective perception. Il rumore è una parola oggetto di percezione selettiva. One person’s favorite song can be another person’s noise. I am struggling to like this pope. Io sono lottano per come questo papa. I had huge respect for his predecessor, but when Pope Benedict was still Cardinal Ratzinger, he did great harm to many of the best theologians in contemporary Catholicism–including some I knew personally. My Catholic relatives were in hopes that they would get a pope more in the tradition of John 23rd.
