Top Theologians?

Written by Mark Van Steenwyk : December 12, 2006

For you theology nerds out there…

Thanks to Graham, who directed me to a recent blog post trying to determine the top living theologians. The rule is that you can only pick up to 10 global theologians and 5 from your own country. I found it difficult, quite frankly, picking five worthy American Theologians. Here’s my list (not in any particular order):

GLOBAL:

Rene Girard
Alasdair MacIntyre
Jurgen Moltmann
NT Wright
Gustavo Gutierez
John Milbank
Leonardo Boff
John Zizioulas
Wolfhart Pannenberg
Oliver O’Donovan

USA:

Stanley Hauerwas
Walter Bruggemann
Miroslav Volf
Harvey Cox
Denny Weaver

Mark Van Steenwyk is the editor of JesusManifesto.com. He is a Mennonite pastor (Missio Dei in Minneapolis), writer, speaker, and grassroots educator. He lives in South Minneapolis with his wife (Amy), son (Jonas) and some of their friends.

You should totally complement this with recommended reading(s) from each theologian, and perhaps with your opinion of their greatest contribution(s) to a contemporary understanding of God.

Hmmm. This is going to be difficult since most of the good theologians are dead, and the lines between global and local are blurred. I'm not as up on theology as I once was, but I'll give it a shot.

    Global:
    Gustavo Gutierez
    N.T. Wright
    Alister McGrath
    John Milbank
    Graham Ward
    Catherine Pickstock
    Jurgen Moltmann
    Wolfhart Pannenberg
Hans Kung (I think he's still alive, but just barely).

    Local:
    Donald Bloesch
    James K.A. Smith
    Miroslav Volf
    Richard Hays
    Stanley Hauerwas

So Catherine Pickstock is the only good woman writing theology? (wink, wink)

I'd augment the list by adding Kwame Bediako (Ghana) and Katheryn Tanner.

Ahh, Katheryn Tanner is definitely good. I don't know Kwame Bediako. I wish LaCugna were still alive...
